Study aimed to determine the efficacy of currently available hemostatic dressings (HCG – HemCon ChitoGauze; QCX – QuikClot XL, CEL – Celox Gauze, CTG – Celox Trauma Gauze) as compared to the current Committee for Tactical Combat Casualty Care Guidelines standard of treatment for hemorrhage control (QCG – QuikClot Combat Gauze) in the DoD consensus model of swine femoral uncontrolled hemorrhage.

QCG and CTG performed poorly on most variables, where the other products, including HCG, performed well in wound packing time, time to hemostasis, blood loss, resuscitation fluids, coagulation profile and histology. The Celox (CEL) product found foreign material in surrounding tissues post histological analysis. This was the only product seen to leave residue in the wound sites. 

These results suggest that the current standard for point-of-injury hemorrhage control (QCG) may need to be re-evaluated or alternatively the standard of care expanded.

This study ultimately led to have ChitoGauze and Celox Gauze included as options in the CoTCCC protocol for hemorrhage control on the battlefield.
