Poster presented at 49th ERA-EDTA, France. May 2012.

In this study, 23 of 450 patients with arteriovenous fistula in the upper extremity that were not able to achieve hemostasis within 30 minutes, were randomized to receive either a chitosan based dressing (pressure for 2 minutes) or an alginate dressing (pressure for 4 minutes).

Chitosan dressings controlled bleeding in ≤ 3 minutes 100% of the time, whereas alginate dressing only controlled bleeding in 4 minutes 50% of the time. Study suggests that the chitosan-based bandage is a safe and more effective hemostatic agent than hemostatic alginate dressing to stop severe, prolonged post-hemodialysis puncture site bleeding.
